G&T REPORT TO GOVERNORS : Spring Term 2008

Year 9 visit to Tate Modern
The masterclass took place at Tate Modern. Themes emerging from this workshop included juxtaposition, metamorphosis and transformation. The central hub housed Surrealist art, which lent itself to discussion on alternative worlds and the subconscious mind of both the artist and the viewer. Pupils sketched some of the sculptures on display and took part in discussions. One Pupil commented, “I learnt that surrealism is not just about a painting of a person eating himself with a spoon, but is about the opposite of realism and is heavily connected with the subconscious.”

Year 8 visit to the ‘Mint Challenge’
The Mint Challenge involved setting up your own minty companies and taking part in a series of workshops that comprised- creative ideas generation; market research; branding and marketing; finance; and pitching.
Students learnt how to collaborate, working together in teams, pitching their ideas to a ‘Dragons Den’ style panel of judges at the end of the day. This event was aimed at inspiring pupils to think about business in a new and exciting light that encouraged and motivated them to fulfil their potential.  After a close finish involving 12 different school Grey Court’s pitch was judged to be the winner and the school received £300 of amazon vouchers as a prize, well done to everybody involved.

Collegium visit to Tate Modern , masterclass on Citizenship
Members of the school collegium considered the local, national and global communities they inhabit and their role within them in this workshop, which encouraged them to develop physical, cultural, social, political and gender awareness. Within the session the pupils explored how art can act as an agent of change and present snapshots of history.

Year 10 visit to Journalist enterprise event.
The task was for each team to complete a five page publication within the deadline - 2.30pm.  Each group needed to select, research and write news stories, as well as edit, proof read and select photographs.  There were two editorial meetings during the day for both groups to present stories, put forward ideas and to discuss which stories need to be developed or discarded.  The groups also needed to discuss headlines and captions for each story.
In addition, each group received a budget of £1,000 to produce their newspaper.  They were charged for advertising printing costs, for printing costs such as colour in masthead, blurb and columns. Groups received penalty fines for missing deadlines and not meeting newspaper criteria by the Editor in Chief.

January – February 2008 –  Year 9 Raising Achievement project
After attending the Real (Raising  Equality and Achievement for Learners)  conference with VP, a conference hosted by London Gifted and Talented we were presented with a project that had worked with many ethnic minority and  EAL students who had been identified as G and T but were underachieving.  The idea was to boost the self esteem and raise the aspirations of the pupils by way of regular contact and a triangular survey that included parents, teachers and the students identified as needing intervention.
Impact: The results for almost all pupils improved between the start of the project and the mock exams.

Summer School  Aspire
A Fantastic Science Summer School was run by Aspire last August.  The Theme was ‘Target Mars’ and the activities, content and Enterprise focus fully engaged those participating.  Year 6 students from feeder Junior Schools worked alongside Grey Court year 7 and year students.  The week was partly subsidised by Waldegrave, our Leading Edge Partner.  This event will run again this Summer and will be expanded to include sessions in the Ingenium.

Year 7  Science Day :   BUNKERED
In November 7aSc1 took part in an exciting Science day, run by Aspire, based on the idea that an asteroid is hurtling towards Earth.  We were split into teams and completed a number of challenges to deal with this impending disaster. Students

  • created a landscape out of sand and designed bunkers for people to live in.
  • wrote new reports using green screens and cameras
  • made radios for communication
  • designed water towers to hold and preserve water.

Teams were awarded points for different tasks.
Working in teams students really got to know different people and were required to follow very detailed instructions. It was well planned and great fun because at the end the year 7s felt they had really learned and achieved a lot, using a variety of skills.  It was great being in the Ingenium for the day.
