Design and Technology at Grey Court School

>> Design & Technology Designers of the Year
>> Year 11 Food Revision Docs

Design and Technology at Grey Court School is essentially a practical subject, which encourages students to recognise that Design and Technology should be seen as a force that changes the world in which we live. It requires students to make practical use of knowledge from other curriculum areas and to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to design and make quality products.

All students study Design and Technology at KS3 and at KS4 they can opt for GSCE specialist courses in Product Design, Textiles, Food or Graphics. All courses are centres upon designing and making activities and we use CAD/CAM to aid designing, modelling, presentation of ideas, control and manufacture.

The process of designing, which is central to the subject, develops skills in research, analysis, investigation, synthesis, making, evaluation and critical reflection.

Design and Technology provides a wide range of opportunities for students to engage in activities that are challenging, relevant and motivating. This gives students enjoyment, satisfaction and a sense of purpose, and enables them to feel they can play a constructive role in a technological society.

We prepare students for a world in which technology is changing at an accelerating rate. Our vision is to provide the best education in Design and Technology, taught in a dedicated and stimulating environment. The requirement of the National Curriculum is met and enhanced with relevant and imaginative teaching.

This experience will ensure students are able to successfully complete ever more challenging tasks, embrace rapidly changing technologies and develop progressively into informed and discriminating citizens.

“Design and technology in the school curriculum is crucial for society in educating this country’s future citizens in the value of product design and how to discern quality in what is offered to them.”
Prof. Richard Seymour Product designer and father of ex-student Peggy.

“The teaching of quality design and technology in our schools is a vital requirement for the country’s future in the 21st Century.”
James Dyson, inventor and manufacturer of the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner.
