What's happening in the Faculty?
The year groups (7-9) have an assessment EVERY half term. This helps you
to be in the right set.
At the end of Year 7 and 8, students sit a SATs like Optional Test.
Students in year 9 who achieve a level 8 have the opportunity to take their
GCSE in Mathematics one year in advance. If students do this, they can
begin their A/S modules in Year 11.

What can you do to improve your Maths?
In addition to all the usual stuff like doing all your homework on time
and having the correct equipment, you might like to know:
The Maths Faculty provides "Intensive Easter Revision" days during
the first week of the Easter Break. If you are in year 9 why not take us up
on the offer? Ask last year's students to see what is was like- you might be
surprised!
Nearer the exams, the Maths Faculty also have exam questions with exemplar
answers and revision booklets.

Key Stage 3
At the start of Key Stage 3, in Year 7, students are set on entry at Grey
Court School. We use Key Stage 2 scores together with primary school teacher
assessment. Pupils are put into a set depending on ability.
In Year 7 pupils follow the ‘condensed learning programme’, which
covers the majority of the Key Stage in two years. This allows either
enrichment through level 8 work in year 9 or the taking of SATs examination
in year 8. As with all years, pupils are set regular homework and sit
an assessment every half term. At the end of Year 7 and 8 progress is again
monitored using the SATs like ‘Optional Tests’.
Very high attainers are encouraged to attend extra classes in Maths, with a
view to sitting the Key Stage 3 exam at the end of Year 8.

Key Stage 4
Course Details
The schemes of work for Mathematics GCSE follow the new National Curriculum
Programme of Study and the new specifications for GCSE from 2006. They aim
to offer opportunities for you to build on your knowledge from Key Stage
3 to achieve the best possible grade by the end of the course. The course
develops mathematical knowledge and encourages the application of this to
practical, investigative and problem-solving situations. Modular units will
be studied within all four attainment targets: Using and Applying Mathematics,
Number and Algebra, Shape, Space and Measure and Handling Data.
Coursework deadlines in Year 10 and Year 11 are in October and November and
a separate letter will be sent to you at this time.

Assessment
This course studied is modular, examined in November and June of year
10, and June in year 11. 20% of the total mark is coursework based (10%
in Year 10 and 10% in Year 11). There are three tiers:-

From 2006 new specifications will govern the GCSE Maths course. Students
will be examined as under the old specifications. However, there are
only two tiers:-

Clearly under the new specifications if you hope to achieve a C grade,
you could take either tier examination. If you wish to achieve a
grade higher than a C then you should take the Higher tier exams. If you
hope to take A Level Mathematics, you must aim to be taking Higher tier
exams in the top set and achieve at least a Grade B.
Use will be made of ICT facilities to assist learning and you should equip
yourselves with an appropriate scientific calculator which should be brought
to each lesson. Emphasis will also be placed on developing mental and written
methods of calculation without calculators as half the exam marks are on non-calculator
papers.
Back to the top Additional Information
Mathematics Statistics
This course is for students who achieve a level 6 or 7 in SATs. Students
complete the Statistics course in year 10 and GCSE Maths in year 11.
Course Details
The objective of this course is to include a sufficient range
of Statistical topics. The course is Linear with 25% coursework
and a terminal examination of 75%
Mathematics A/S level
You are expected to have achieved a Level 8 in SATS. Anything lower and
you will find the course extremely difficult.
Introduction
The objective of the course is to include a sufficient range of mathematical
topics so that when you successfully complete the course you will have the
necessary basis for progressing to further study in Economics, Geography,
Mathematics, or related subjects like Physics or Engineering.
Course Details
The A/S Course in Year 11 consists of C1 and C2 (Two Pure Mathematics modules)
and S1 (Statistics).
Assessment
C1, C2 and S1 in June of Year 11
Each module will be 1 hr and 30 minutes
