Teacher development

Grey Court provides a comprehensive professional development programme for trainee, early career and established teachers. This is further enhanced through our membership of the Wandle teaching school hub; an alliance of schools in the London boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Richmond and Wandsworth, formed to provide ongoing development for teachers at every stage of their career.

Initial teacher training

As a training school we co-ordinate placements for trainee teachers in schools across south west London and Surrey. Each year we work closely with universities and the Department for Education (DfE) to offer teaching placements for post graduate (PGCE) and School Direct trainees. We have close working relationships with many universities, including St Mary’s, Roehampton, King’s College London, and Goldsmiths.

Early career teachers

We work closely with the Institute of Education and the Chartered College of Teaching to provide a two year training programme for early career teachers (ECTs). This highly structured, in-house programme involves close mentoring, support and encouragement of new teachers, and exceeds the statutory standards of the DfE’s early career framework. Many of our ECTs go on to build successful careers at Grey Court.

Ongoing teacher development

We actively encourage staff to continue their professional development. This could be through our in-house training and learning sessions, or through more formal routes such as the national professional qualifications for early, middle or senior leaders (NPQEL, NPQML and NPQSL).

Teaching and Learning

Staff are invited to attend regular, in-house teaching and learning sessions. These focus on new research and embedding outstanding practice. Each session concentrates on a specific area of teaching, such as positive behaviour management or marking and feedback techniques.

Our popular teaching and learning book club provides a further forum for teachers to reflect on the latest educational literature. Some research material we have considered includes “Boys don’t try? Rethinking masculinity in schools” (Roberts and Pinkett) and “Retrieval Practice” (Kate Jones).

We work within a collaborative learning community that seeks to benefit all students and staff. Our highly trained teaching and learning team regularly supports other schools in our local area, as well as across the UK, in raising teaching standards for the benefit of every child.
