Overview
Further mathematics A level is for those who enjoy and excel in maths, and want to stretch themselves even further. There is also an opportunity to sit the AS in further mathematics, a prerequisite by many universities for studying maths at degree level.
This A level is the study of core pure, further statistics and decision. There are two core pure units and one each of further statistics and decision mathematics. The core pure is an extension of the pure mathematics units studied for A level mathematics.
The three overarching themes of the further mathematics A level are: mathematical argument, language and proof; mathematical problem-solving; and mathematical modelling.
Facilities
Further mathematics A level is taught in the purpose-built sixth form block by specialist A level teachers.
Growth
This A level affords the opportunity to study mathematics at a deeper level and to see how it links with other areas of the curriculum. Students are encouraged to develop their creative, analytical, problem-solving and independent thinking skills.
Enrichment
A level students help those from the lower school during lunchtime mathematics clubs, or by mentoring at key stage 4. They are also encouraged to take advantage of university maths enrichment opportunities.
Careers
Problem-solving, and analytical and technical skills gained during maths, are highly regarded by employers, and maths has been shown to increase long-term earning power by up to 10 per cent. It can open careers in engineering, banking, accountancy and operational research.
Many universities require students to have at least AS further mathematics in order to undertake a degree in mathematics.
