Overview

By learning a new language students increase their interaction with the global community. A shared language provides an intrinsic appreciation of other lives and cultures and opens new horizons for our linguists through opportunities to live, study and work abroad. We teach French, German, Mandarin and Spanish. Students are able to speak, listen, read and write in their chosen language(s).

Facilities

Languages are taught in our two-storey languages block, in seven specialist classrooms.

Key Stage 3

Students begin their study of languages in year 7 by taking either Spanish or Mandarin. A second language (either French or German) is introduced in year 8. Students progress through increasing complexities of vocabulary and grammar, ending year 9 with an ability to hold a basic conversation using all the main tenses.

Key Stage 4

Students who choose to study a language at GCSE develop fluency around themes such as life, work and travel. They further their knowledge of using tenses and their understanding of the culture, identity and lives of other people. They also hone their skills in translation by the end of year 11.
