Grey Court Sixth Form’s Age of Enlightenment!
Grey Court Sixth Form’s A-level results have broken the 70% barrier for A*-B grades for the first time in its illustrious history. With science and mathematics results matching the soaring summer temperatures; Associate Head teacher, Vicki Price, declared this year to be “Grey Court’s age of enlightenment.”
Leading the way was Physics with 94% of its cohort achieving A*-B, with Chemistry (85% A*-B) and Biology (79%) also securing outstanding performances from their charges. Across a Grey Court landscape parched by this summer’s drought, Mathematics has proved to be an oasis of academic productivity with a sensational 20 students achieving A* grades alongside another 11 A* in Further Mathematics.
This has naturally led to a raft of students being accepted into England’s elite universities to study mathematics and science related subjects with both Xavier Mtandabari and Joseph Belfield reading Chemistry at Oxford, Georgia Hawes studying Veterinary Science at Cambridge and Shiven Kothari studying computer science at King’s College London. Congratulations should also be made to Jeremy McCarthy and Pietro Pasquali whose rush of A* grades secured them places at Bristol to read Mechanical Engineering and UCL to read Physics.
Well done to Aimee Howkins and Viet Hoang Nguyen, who led the way in economics with their outstanding grades securing them places at UCL and LSE. Finally, Grey Court’s strategy of encouraging students to mix Btec qualifications with A-levels has proved to be a fertile ground once again with Efe Yazici winning a place to read Law at Exeter and Grace Hooper who will study Bio Med Science in Manchester.
When quizzed about the exponential rise in science and mathematics grades this year, a delighted Assistant Head teacher and Grey Court chemist, Mr Karan Bhumbla, attributed the success to a combination of exam strategy, a focus on higher order thinking skills and a culture of hard work. This sentiment was supported by the future Oxford chemist, student Xavier Mtandabari who when asked about the influence of enlightenment thinker John Locke on his performance, quipped that it was more a case of the year group being absolutely, “locked in!”
The rise in exam grades across the sixth form highlights how the social contract between the staff, students and parents within the Grey Court community is thriving with the headlines:

70% of A-level grades at A*-B
92% of grades at A*- C
68% of BTec grades at D*/D
The last word was with Head of Sixth Form, Ms Jane Higham, who praised the students and staff for “overcoming the extreme temperatures in which they sat their exams to produce red hot results that were truly enlightening.”
