Outside normal age group

There are some scenarios in which children may be educated outside of their chronological year group. Parents are entitled to request this, in writing, for their children. Requests must be made to the headteacher.

Cases will be assessed on individual circumstances and may involve:

  • taking account of the parent's views
  • consideration of information from the primary school
  • where relevant, a review of the child's medical history and the views of a medical professional
  • consideration of whether the child has previously been educated outside the normal age group
  • where relevant, consideration of whether the child may naturally have fallen into a lower age group had they not been born prematurely.

For a child to be considered for admission to a year group outside of their chronological age group, parents must submit a request by email to the headteacher, outlining the rationale for their request and any relevant supporting evidence. This will be reviewed and parents will be informed of the decision in due course. Parents do not have a right of appeal if their request is not accepted, but they may make a complaint about the decision. The complaints policy is on the policies page.
