Overview
The digital world is fundamental to almost every aspect of modern life. Mastery of this subject opens a wealth of career opportunities as we move into a fast-changing, technologically advanced world. Computer science at A level provides skills in developing software and programs to carry us into the future. Students will be trained in computational thinking - abstract thought processes for humans and machines which are at the core of decision making and problem solving. An integral part of computer science is considering the legal, moral, ethical and cultural issues of technological advancement. Students leave the course with an understanding of what they are designing, its application, and the impact it will have on the world.
Facilities
The sixth form centre has dedicated, well-equipped computer suites.
Growth
Students build on their existing knowledge of computer software, to inform their understanding of how computers work and in planning and developing their own programs. They learn how computers “think” and apply this to their A level work. There is an opportunity for independent study through an assessed programming project.
Enrichment
We provide plentiful opportunities to explore the subject in a real-world setting. There are work related placements, discussions and talks with computer scientists in industry, and specialist trips to enhance learning outside the classroom.
Careers
Computer science trains students in lateral thinking and problem solving, characteristics that can be applied in any number of careers, such as: medicine, law, business, gaming technology or politics.
