English literature: A level

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grade 9-5 including maths
  • English literature and English language at minimum grade 6.

Overview

English A level at Grey Court focuses on aspects of tragedy and elements of crime writing. It is aimed at students who love reading and enjoy discussing and writing about poetry, drama and prose. A literature class is one in which every student is expected to have an opinion, be devoted to improving their writing style and have a passionate and creative outlook. Students explore tragic texts and flawed heroes/heroines, and analyse crime literature.

Facilities

English A level is taught in the purpose-built sixth form block, surrounded by images and quotations from the greatest literary texts from around the world.

Growth

Students are expected to read widely and extensively. As well as the set texts they will be encouraged to read around their subject and widen the breadth of their reading material. They develop their own critical writing style, underpinned by careful analysis of the texts.

Enrichment

A level students are expected to enhance their learning through theatre trips, wider reading and attending talks by visiting authors.

Careers

English literature is a highly valued A level. Possible careers include: law, publishing, education, journalism and the media.
