Entry requirements
- 5 GCSEs at grade 9-5 including maths and English
- GCSE English minimum grade 6
- It is not essential to have a GCSE in religious studies (RS).
Overview
Philosophy A level considers some of the greatest questions of what it means to be human. Students explore fundamental questions about knowledge, life, morality and human nature. Our A level students are taught to apply reason and logic to answer questions such as: what is the meaning and purpose of life? how do we know what we know? does God exist? what does it mean to possess consciousness? and, what is the value of morals? The course includes epistemology (the study of knowledge), ethics (morality and ethical dilemmas) and the philosophy of religion and mind (the concept of God and the nature of mind and body).
Facilities
Philosophy A level is taught in the purpose-built sixth form centre by specialist teachers.
Growth
The A level in philosophy is different from the GCSE in RS as it examines the theory behind thinking on religious beliefs, rather than the theological elements of religious study. Students who enjoyed debating religious and philosophical attitudes will find much to engage with on this course.
Enrichment
Enrichment activities are provided through visits, workshops and attendance at conferences. We also run in-house workshops on thinking skills and learning.
Careers
Philosophy students are critical thinkers, an attribute that is highly valued by employers. Future careers include law, policing, politics and social work.
