Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grade 9-5 including maths and English
  • For those who have studied combined science: minimum grade 7, plus minimum grade 7 in maths
  • For those who have studied separate sciences: minimum grade 7 in physics, minimum grades 7 and 6 in the other specialisms, plus minimum grade 7 in maths.

Overview

Physics explores the fundamental principles that govern the universe. It underpins life itself from the smallest subatomic particles to stars and whole galaxies; it forms the basis of everything around us from light and electricity to radiation, gravity and motion. Physicists explore some of the greatest issues of our time, including developing new technologies, engineering new materials and utilising scarce resources. A level physicists develop practical skills, explore motion, electrons, waves and photons, and explore astrophysics and medical physics.

Facilities

Physics A level is taught in specialist labs. Teaching is in small groups by specialist physics teachers.

Growth

Physics at A level is a rigorous and demanding course, with a high dependency on mathematical skills. It requires detailed explanations and in-depth analysis. Many of the equations and explanations are derived from first principles by examining observations from the natural world.

Enrichment

Grey Court has strong links with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in nearby Teddington for visits, advice and support. We have arranged visits to view the Hadron Collider at CERN and provide opportunities for students to attend university talks and lectures.

Careers

Problem-solving and analytical thinking are key skills in physics and are highly valued in the workplace. Physicists are sought after in careers such as engineering, research and development, data analysis and education.
