Entry requirements
- 5 GCSEs at grade 9-5 including maths and English
- GCSE English or history minimum grade 6.
Overview
Politics A level looks at the power structures in society, and at how power is exercised, distributed and challenged. We are all affected by politics be that at local, national or international level. Studying politics provides an insight into political beliefs and is central to an understanding of the modern world.
A level students explore: UK politics, US politics and various ideologies. During the A level students study UK electoral systems, political parties, parliament and voting behaviour. They also study US specific topics such as the constitution, presidency and civil rights. The ideologies studied include conservatism, socialism, liberalism and feminism.
Facilities
Politics A level is taught in the purpose-built sixth form centre.
Growth
Politics A level is fairly unique in that the focus is on formulating arguments and analysing real political issues. Politics exists because people disagree – and studying it means exploring how, why and when those disagreements arise. Students are encouraged to question ideas, think critically, and develop well-structured arguments of their own.
Enrichment
Students visit Parliament and meet MPs, Lords and senior figures in government, as well as participating in workshops run inside the Palace of Westminster. They participate in external discussions and debates throughout their course.
Careers
The ability to analyse information, to discuss and work out disagreements, are essential skills in the workplace. Studying politics provides these transferable skills and opens the possibility of working in journalism, law, media, politics, the civil service and business and management.
