Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grade 9-5 including maths and English.

Overview

Sociology is the study of society and understanding human behaviour. The focus is on the way people form relationships and how our individual identities are constructed. A level students consider culture and identity, crime and deviance, mass media and education. They look at different sociological perspectives such as Marxism, feminism and functionalism.

Facilities

Sociology A level is taught in the purpose-built sixth form centre.

Growth

This is a new subject for most students and they are expected to develop skills in independent learning. In particular, there is a focus on debate, discussion and methodological research.

Enrichment

We arrange a number of work-related placements, talks and seminars, and encourage students to participate in debates and discussions.

Careers

Sociology provides skills in critical thinking, analytical writing and problem-solving. These are highly sought after in fields such as media, law, social work, criminal justice and public relations.
