Overview

This is an alternative advanced qualification (AAQ) designed to sit alongside A levels. It carries UCAS points and is recognised by universities. Students receive an advanced national extended certificate at the end of the course.

Health and social care is about understanding people, their needs, and how to support them effectively in real-world contexts. This course blends theory with practical learning, helping students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to work in, or progress towards, a wide range of rewarding careers in the health, care and social sectors.

Students explore key issues such as equality and diversity, mental health, anatomy and physiology, public health, person-centred practice and sexual health. Alongside subject expertise, they also develop transferable skills.

Facilities

Health and social care is taught in the purpose-built sixth form centre.

Growth

This course blends academic study with applied, real-world tasks, such as creating care plans, conducting interviews, researching public health, and producing advice materials. Students develop highly transferable skills: communication, teamwork, independent research, reflection and problem-solving. The subject is taught through a mix of interactive lessons, case studies, practical activities and coursework projects, making it engaging and varied.

Enrichment

There are talks by guest speakers working in healthcare, social work and community services. We arrange work placements to put classroom-based learning into professional practice and encourage links with local providers to gain real-life, practical experience.

Careers

Students can use this qualification to pursue careers such as nursing, midwifery, youth work, social work and health sciences.
